With the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain coming up I knew one subject I wanted to portray for the Guild of Aviation Artists Annual exhibition for 2010.
To get the angles that I’d visualised I built an Airfix 1/48 kit, then took it out into the garden for photography – to get the correct lighting and shadows.
I chose to portray Spitfires of 610 (County of Chester) Squadron RAF first based at Gravesend then at RAF Biggin Hill during the Battle of Britain. I chose to show them on patrol over the iconic white cliffs of Dover. It was displayed in the Annual exhibition at the Mall Galleries and drew some great comments.
