Supermarine Spitfire 1A N3200While attending the ‘Flying Legends’ air show at Duxford, 2017, I was engrossed in the flying, especially the massed flight of Spitfires. The last one to land parked up in front of me, just as some Mustangs took off. Instead of watching these I focussed on the Spitfire and its pilot. He got out of the cockpit and was obviously enjoying the display. As I saw this I knew I HAD to
paint the Scene.

When nearly complete I was able to find out the name of the pilot and got in touch. I found that the Spitfire’s engine overheated quickly, so had to park very quickly on that hot summer’s day.

The resulting oil painting was selected and was exhibited at the Guild of Aviation Artists’ 2018 Paintings of the Year exhibition, at the Mall Galleries in London.

This year I was able to visit Duxford and the pilot (’Rats’ Ratcliffe) was able to view it himself and was kind enough to sign the Painting.
