For once, the aircraft came second!

My good friend Kevin Johnson knows the Lake District like the back of his hand and has walked the hills many times, using Wainwright’s books as a guide. Kevin is also a superb photographer.

When I saw this image I knew I needed to portray it – but with an aircraft! But what? I’ve wanted to portray the V-22 Osprey for some time and it just seemed to fit the bill – something unusual and distinctive.

I’ve shown it coming up the valley near to the Sphinx Rock on Great Gable above Wastwater in the distance.

Little did I know that I was to paint the scene a second time – as a surprise present for the ‘photographer’ !
