After the very favourable response to my ‘Schubert One to Mayday’, it was mentioned that there are no paintings of the Lightning prototypes. Researching into the early days, I saw that there was a big difference between the first P1A and the next stages of development. How best to portray this? After a few arrangements, my solution was to show the prototype aircraft flying together, so that they could be compared. I’ve shown them over Boscombe Down where much of the test flying was done. Spot the Short SB.5 below – an important part of the early development. ‘Genesis’ is now available as a limited-edition print. Please ask for details.
