I’ve been fascinated by the Grumman F-14 for many years. I’ve drawn and painted several pictures of the Tomcat before, but really wanted to portray the type in its element – high up – in a special way.
After considering which F-14 squadron to depict and finding it difficult (even after a poll!) I had a brainwave – showing the first and last squadrons with the type. Firstly an aircraft from VF-124 Gunfighters (one of the two training squadrons) and featuring the last US Navy aircraft to fly: from VF-31 Tomcatters, F-14D BuNo. 164603 flying from NAS Oceana to Republic Airport for preservation. Hence the title: ‘From Alpha to Omega’.
I was SO pleased when the painting was completed – I just know ‘that’s it’ ! I’ve had such a fantastic reaction to the piece.
