Gouache

One of my favourite airfields is at Breighton, home of the Real Aeroplane Company. It’s used for general aviation flying located on the former Royal Air Force Breighton, which housed Halifax and Lancasters during WW2.

One of my first visits was on a rather special Fly-in – with many visiting aircraft including some superb warbirds – two Mustangs, a Corsair, a Spitfire, etc. There was a superb atmosphere with aircraft displayed well on a fabulous summer’s day.

I went along the crowd line watching what was going on and observing aircraft being prepared for flight etc. I saw this beautiful Mustang ‘sunbathing’ and knew it was to be painted. I used gouache (body colour, or opaque watercolour) to capture the bright colours and feeling of the day.
