The subject matter was inspired by a visit to the then famous RAF Finningly Airshow back in 1991. Amongst all the military aircraft on static display I came upon this fully-restored beauty, G-ACZE, a 1946 de Havilland Rapide DH-89A, built in 1934.
I just loved the reflections on the beautiful finish of the aircraft. She was painted to represent an aircraft from the King’s Flight. I spotted somebody’s teddy bear sitting in the cockpit – from which the title derives.
I painted her in gouache, enabling me to capture the bright colours and reflections from the original. It quickly sold at the GAvA annual exhibition, with a major prize being awarded for my efforts, is greatly appreciated!
