Goodbye Mr C

The operation of the Phantom by the Royal Navy always fascinated me, especially the take-off.

In this painting, I wanted to show the force, noise, and drama of an 892 Naval Air Squadron (892 NAS) Phantom launch. Indeed my first thought for the painting’s title was ‘The Power and the Glory”.

However, during my research, I found that HRH the Prince of Wales visited HMS Ark Royal during 1977, the year of the Queen’s Silver Jubilee. Prince Charles visited for just one day. For his time on board, a Phantom was appropriately marked “Red Thistle Flight”, for his departure, the Phantom displayed “Goodbye Mr.C”. New title!
